Tailoring Cloths for Autumn Wear
Posted by Bookster on 1st Aug 2024
You have to think ahead when ordering custom tailored garments…when it comes to cloth types and weights and the time it takes us to make individual garments. We are still sending out warmer weather orders of linens and other fine woollens, yet the weather here has varied in the UK so unpredictably. We have had the wettest May and coldest June on record, now at the end of July, almost reassuringly it is very hot…
It’s difficult to plan so far ahead but undoubtedly, except for some unpredictable heat waves, or perhaps snow in October, autumn will bring some cool, wet and windy weather! A great time of year to enjoy tweed and coating fabrics or some cavalry twill trousers. Of course this is the other way round for our friends in Australia and New Zealand!
We thought it might be helpful to share some of our thoughts and experience for you to plan ahead for timely additions to your wardrobe.
On the website, we like to generalise about the weights to make life easier. For example, a heavy weight suiting will be the same weight as a medium weight tweed. A woolly tweed such as Harris Tweed at a light to medium weight of 400g , we will call a medium weight. To complicate things, some mills measure grams per square meter and some grams per linear meter. So at this time of year we are considering new additions to our range of light to medium and medium weights, for autumn and also winter use. Now is the tine for you to plan ahead for timely additions to your wardrobe.
Cloth weights are a good starting point but don’t get too distracted by specific weights as they can vary as to how warm or cool they are. There are other properties to cloths. You have to take into account your potential uses and conditions. Office and Country, temperate or extreme weather.
Londedin Tweed from Harrisons of Edinburgh is a great example of a beautiful versatile cloth for jackets and suits. A light to medium, true tweed with a smooth finish, that is comfortable and practical and ideal for autumn even if the sun comes out. Layering is more acceptable than ever these days so in the work environment you can hang up the jacket and look simply splendid with the waistcoat and trousers…
So take a look at our light to medium weight tweeds and also the medium weights, for jackets only or outdoor use.Suitings for autumn would be ideal at a medium weight of 340g-400g for worsted or lighter weights for flannels.
